The idea that everyone will be raised from the dead is rooted in several key passages of Scripture. Jesus teaches in John 5:28–29 that “all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come out,” showing that resurrection is universal, involving both those who have done good and those who have done evil. Daniel 12:2 echoes this when it says that many who sleep in the dust will awake, some to everlasting life and others to shame and everlasting contempt. Paul describes the same event in Acts 24:15, affirming that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked. For believers specifically, 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 describes the Lord descending with a shout and the dead in Christ rising first, followed by the living who are caught up with them. Paul also explains in 1 Corinthians 15:52 that the resurrection will happen “in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye,” when the dead are raised imperishable. Jeremiah 24 uses the vivid image of two baskets of figs to explain God’s judgment and mercy toward Judah. One basket contains very good figs; the other contains very bad figs. These symbolize two groups of people and their very different futures. Good Figs — The Exiles in BabylonGod says the good figs represent the Judeans already taken into exile under King Jeconiah. Surprisingly, these exiles are the ones God is watching over for their good. Bad Figs — Those Remaining in the LandThe bad figs represent King Zedekiah, his officials, and the people who remained in Jerusalem or fled to Egypt. God declares they will face: Horror and reproach among the nations.Meaning of the VisionJeremiah 24 overturns expectations:Those who seemed fortunate to avoid exile are actually the ones under judgment, while those taken away are the ones God will restore. The figs reveal God’s deeper perspective on obedience, repentance, and future hope. One‑Sentence SummaryJeremiah 24 teaches that God will restore the exiles who turn back to Him, while those who remain rebellious in the land will face severe judgment.Athens Bible Church presents a consistent identity across its website, podcast platforms, and video channels: a Bible‑centered, Christ‑focused, missions‑minded fellowship serving Athens County, Ohio.Their online presence emphasizes expository preaching, traditional worship, and practical discipleship rooted in Scripture. The Ark of the Covenant was built at Sinai under Moses and placed inside the Tabernacle’s Holy of Holies. During Israel’s wilderness journey, the Ark traveled with the people, sometimes leading them when they marched and always remaining at the center of the camp. When Israel crossed the Jordan into the Promised Land, the priests carried the Ark into the river, and the waters stopped until the nation had passed over. The Ark was then carried around Jericho during the conquest, and afterward it came to rest at Shiloh, where it remained for generations.During the days of Eli, Israel brought the Ark into battle against the Philistines, and the Ark was captured. The Philistines moved it from city to city, but each place was struck with plagues, so they sent it back to Israel on a cart. It arrived at Beth‑shemesh and was then taken to Kiriath‑jearim, where it stayed in the house of Abinadab for many years. When David became king, he attempted to bring the Ark to Jerusalem, but the first attempt ended with the death of Uzzah. The Ark was left in the house of Obed‑edom for a time. Later, David brought it to Jerusalem properly, carried by Levites, and placed it in a tent he had prepared. When Solomon built the Temple, the Ark was moved into the Holy of Holies. This is the final recorded location of the Ark in Scripture. After the days of Josiah, the Ark disappears from the biblical narrative, and the Bible never describes its removal or destruction.Athens Bible Church presents a consistent identity across its website, podcast platforms, and video channels: a Bible‑centered, Christ‑focused, missions‑minded fellowship serving Athens County, Ohio.Their online presence emphasizes expository preaching, traditional worship, and practical discipleship rooted in Scripture. 1 Kings 13 tells a tightly focused story about a man of God from Judah, King Jeroboam, and an old prophet from Bethel, showing how seriously God treats obedience to His word. The chapter unfolds in four movements: a prophecy, a miracle, a deception, and a judgment. Prophecy Against Jeroboam’s Altar (vv. 1–5)A “man of God” arrives at Bethel while Jeroboam is offering incense on his unauthorized altar. He prophesies that a future king of Judah—Josiah—will destroy that altar and desecrate it. As an immediate sign, the altar splits apart and its ashes spill out. When Jeroboam tries to seize the prophet, his hand withers until the prophet prays for him and it is restored. A Command of Total Separation (vv. 6–10)God had given the man of God strict instructions:Do not eat or drink in Bethel.Do not return by the same route. This symbolized total rejection of Jeroboam’s counterfeit worship system. The prophet obeys and refuses the king’s hospitality. The Old Prophet’s Deception (vv. 11–19)An old prophet living in Bethel hears what happened. He finds the man of God and lies to him, claiming an angel told him to bring him home to eat and drink. The man of God believes the lie and breaks God’s command. Judgment on the Man of God (vv. 20–32)While they are eating, God speaks through the old prophet and announces judgment: because the man of God disobeyed the Lord’s direct command, he will die and not be buried in his family tomb. On his journey home, a lion kills him—but does not eat him or harm the donkey—showing this was a divine act, not a random attack. The old prophet retrieves the body, mourns him, and buries him in his own tomb. Jeroboam Still Refuses to Repent (vv. 33–34)Despite the miracles and warnings, Jeroboam continues in idolatry and appoints unauthorized priests. This sin ensures the eventual destruction of his dynasty.
